The colour especially put me off being Hello Yellow. There are many different designs and colours available for both the FORTWO modles, the FORFOUR and the Roadster's. I have seen many more for the FORTWO's especially patterned ones which help to make the car especially unique. The actual colour of the car is made up of two parts. Firstly there is the actual secured panel and then additionally there are custom panels which are placed to give it a two coloured look. These additional panels are available from many sources but are quite expensive. But depending on your model of car you can find sites which trade between each other. Never the less, all the car is made of plastic and I found out through a collision with a shopping trolley, that it is not the strongest of plastics either. Immediately I found my petrol consumption was far far lower than any of my previous cars. I had previously owned a Corsa and spent £60 a month on Petrol - now I pay £5 a month for petrol and cover the same distance. I couldn't tell you the exact distance I do but I know I can get at least 500 Miles on £30. In my experience driving this car is far cheaper than getting any form of public transport, and is far quicker. However the main draw back of this design is that due to the Engine size, it burns more fuel than it would if it had say a 1.2 litre engine. However the Diesel model uses far more fuel than the petrol. Despite my car only having a 800CC engine, the size and weight of the car means that it is very swift and nippy. I do however notice that with another person in the car that it does slow down and isn't as fast to accelerate. Although this is true of most cars, one person extra shouldn't make this much difference In addition to petrol none of the other liquids really need topping up nor does it need any tweaking which other cars usually need. If you ever did need to top these up the engine is beneath the boot - which is not overly accessible. Some liquids also go in the front through grills which is clumsily designed and difficult to measure as there is no scale. Despite it being so small, there is ample boot space, and if you lower the passenger seat you can fit another suitcase in there. I frequently fit 10-15 bag's of shopping into the boot and the front area with ease but do miss having a seperated boot area when I put my dog in the car as she can find her way into the front too easily. The dash board is far too basic for my liking though. It feels very plastic and simplistic, for example the rev counter and the clock are two seperate 'bubble' dials which just seem oddly placed and redundant. The speed display is simplistic and could have had more information displayed, perhaps a seperate fuel gauge rather than the tiny digitial one it does display. I also miss having a resettable mile counter, again something which should have been included. I miss having a spare tyre, and a great fear I have is breaking down in a rural area and not knowing where I am. Its a safety feature I think should have been covered in the design. I was told how safe this car is as it was rated exceptionally highly by reviews. You do feel slightly at risk being so high up in the seat overlooking everything which is going on but you also notice the mount of airbags around you. I had a day during January when the snow was very thick on the roads and I slipped down a hill. My back tyres weren't able to grip onto the road and I lost all control of the car. The warning lights came on telling me about the back wheels and i slipped down the hill onto a roadside missing a tree. There was no impact but I feel confident knowing that if I had the air bags would have gone off. There's very little I can think of that I have found that I can include. I would always recommend getting one of these car's if you're planning to do a lot of little journeys. I do travel on the motorways quickly frequently but only for 50-60 miles so I doubt that it would do much good beyond that. I am quite excited to see how many miles this Smart car will reach but I have a feeling it will last a long time, as they were certainly built to survive a lot. Oh and finally, I forgot to add about the parking. Now you can park fantastically in any bay however small, but parallel parking is very hard because of the steering/turning circle. It may be me but I haven't been able to do it properly yet but it might get easier when I get used to not having a full bonnet. ... less jimboy81 03.05.2008 (04.05.2008) Ciao members have rated this car review on average: very helpful Review of MCC Smart & pulse Value for Money Road Handling Comfort Features Fuel consumption Looks Smart Car smart choice Advantages: Fuel efficient, easy to park, good driving position, saved my husband's life Disadvantages: Not much boot space (but enough for a dog!) We have recently been (for a short time) the proud owners of a Smart Pulse. In the 10 weeks we had the car I drove over 3000 miles in it in total comfort. My normal car is a large family saloon, but I found the Smart a great car to drive and am very sad we no longer have it - more on that later. The driving position is elevated a little like a people carrier and there is a feeling of spaciousness provided by a deep dashboard. But that is changing, thanks to the introduction of the practical five-seater Smart ForFour (a four-seat edition is also available). Auto Express Car Reviews By Chris Thorp September 2004 With only the two-seat ForTwo and Roadster in its line-up, Smart never had a chance to establish itself as a family favourite. But that is changing, thanks to the introduction of the practical five-seater Smart ForFour (a four-seat edition is also available). Auto Express got hold of the very first model to be registered in the UK to see if the youthful brand really can be grown up. Like all Smarts, the ForFour isn't beautiful or sleek, but its cheeky bulges and curves draw you in and hold your interest. You've only got to look at the way children stare at the ForFour to see that its shape appeals on a very basic level. Line it up next to Mitsubishi's more conservative Colt, which is based on the same underpinnings as the Smart, and you start to admire the German firm for sticking to its quirky principles. What's more, the designers lost none of their flair when it came to crafting the interior. The attractive dash- board is well laid out, but what is particularly impressive is that the build and trim quality issues of the Roadster are nowhere to be seen. In fact, much of the switchgear is taken from Mercedes' parts bin, giving the cabin a premium feel. But the whole point of this Smart is that it offers practicality, so plenty of thought has been put into the rear seat arrangement, too. It has a conventional 60/40 split, but the entire rear bench can be slid backwards and forwards to increase legroom or bootspace. While passengers in the back have plenty of headroom, the tapered window line cuts into the available shoulder space, and gives a claustrophobic feel for taller occupants. But the point at which people normally decide whether they love or hate a Smart is when they get behind the wheel. The ForFour is the first model in the firm's history to have a conventional manual gearbox, which gives a three-pedal set-up to those who can't get on with the clutchless transmission which has split opinion in the rest of the range. What's more, the new manual has a slick and precise action, and is light and easy to use around town. Once on the move, it's clear that the company was keen to lose none of the character of its other models. The steering will be too light for some, but A and B-roads pose no problems to the tidy-handling ForFour - it's no hot hatch, but the chassis is well up to the standard of most rivals. Our test car came with the entry-level 75bhp 1.1-litre three-cylinder powerplant, and it provides a buzzy engine note and surprisingly swift performance. The good news is that the ForFour doesn't seem to have adopted the steep pricing of its siblings. Our test model weighs in at ΂£8,995, while entry-level variants are available for only ΂£7,995. Far from corrupting the brand, the ForFour shows that Smart design hasn't been ForGotten... Available with a decent range of engines and a practical cabin, the ForFour is great to drive and looks good, too. As long as you can resist raiding the options list, it's not too expensive either.
