A manual gearshift, sharper steering and a bit more in the way of engine was all that was stopping these diminutive sportsters from becoming modern classics. As it stands theyre still hugely underrated drivers cars and, with production coming to a close, the finale special edition models mark your last opportunity to buy one of these tiny cars packed full of character. Light weight, mid-engine, rear wheel drive, a well balanced chassis and enough room for two six-footers inside are features any self-respecting sports car designer would ask for from the off if given a blank sheet of paper. Add neat detailing, excellent fuel economy and an affordable on the road price and its tough to see how the smart roadster and roadster-coupe could fail. The answer probably lay in a public who saw the value proposition as somewhat lacking given the amount of power they had to play with. After all, it was only when you started buying the BRABUS models with their 101bhp engines that you started to appreciate what the chassis was capable of. Given that the BRABUS version of the roadster-coupe retailed at over £17,000, it was easy to see why most in this market decided on something like a hot Clio, a Civic Type-R or, latterly, a Focus ST. The finale edition models are a little more affordable, the roadster version pitched at £13,990 with the roadster-coupe tacking another £700 onto that price. This commemorative edition features the standard 80bhp engine but has had quite a few options thrown at it including 17-inch runline alloy wheels, metallic paint, air conditioning, a modular cockpit clock and rev counter. Theres also a starter switch integrated in the gear shifter, an upgraded stereo system, interior trim in flow silver and an exclusive colour combination on the roadster of speed silver body panels paired with a black tridion safety cell. The front and rear grilles have been keyed the same colour as the body, giving the car a lower, more aggressive look."Theres a genuine mini exotic feel about these cars"That now represents quite a lot of car for the money but smart will have to work hard on promotion to shift stock. In the three years, the roadster and roadster-coupe have been on sale in the UK, theyve shifted 6,500 units. Given that Mazdas MX-5 shifts around 600 units a month, its easy to see why smart have taken the tough decision to axe these fun sportsters. With the stillborn smart 4x4 also canned and the forfour set to be ditched, times are tough in Smartville. Still, as tough as things are for the DaimlerChrysler-owned company, its hard not to take advantage of their plight when the prices look like this. Plus theres the fact that virtually every used car expert around figures that these cars will become collectable in years to come. The roadster and roadster-coupe models differ largely in the way they lose their heads. The roadster features an electrically-powered soft top along the lines of the smart fortwo cabrio, although a matt hardtop can also be specified. This model has a notchback boot, in contrast to the roadster-coupe that boasts a high-gloss hardtop with a soft top as an option. Its up to you to decide which you prefer the looks of. Motive power comes from a familiar source, namely the three-cylinder turbocharged 698cc engine found in the smart fortwo coupe, although in this instance it has been boosted to produce 80bhp. This may sound small beer, but in a car that weighs just 790kg, it makes a fair fist of punting the roadster models up the Queens highway. Theyll accelerate to 60mph in 10.7 seconds and will top out at 109mph. Dont make the mistake of thinking this is just a smart fortwo coupe with a racy body. Only 35 per cent of parts are shared between the two cars, although much of the interior will look mighty familiar to existing smart owners. One thing that is shared is the feeling of space inside. With the three-pot engine behind the driver instead of a pair of useless vestigial seats, cabin room up front is optimised. Elbowroom is the only concern with two burly blokes on board, but otherwise the little smart feels surprisingly, well, big. Theres more than a hint of old Porsche 911 from the view ahead, the twin humps of the headlamps allowing you to position the car very accurately. With ESP stability control to save you from the potential embarrassment of planting a 700cc car into the scenery, you soon build confidence in this tiny roadster. The engine whooshes, wheezes and pops behind your left ear and youll need to work the gear lever (or, if you specify them, shift paddles) in order to keep it in that fun zone between 3,000 and 6,000rpm. Smart have managed to engineer out much of the ponderous understeer that affects the city coupe quite so drastically, instead concentrating on a more enthusiast-focused set up. There seems to be hardly any body roll mid-corner and the light weight means that the suspension engineers have been able to reduce the amount of dive and squat when braking and accelerating to create a very fun, stable platform. Yes, a Citroen C2 VTS will get from A to B quicker, but the Smart roadster/coupe, driver will enjoy the trip more. Drop the roof, savour the vaguely exotic feel of the car and youll have a ball. Whats more, its completely unthreatening without lapsing into feyness. Perhaps the roadster and roadster-coupe models werent quite as smart as they thought they were. With this finale edition, smart are making a last-ditch effort to make some amends.
