The Roadster and Brabus models should be serviced every 7,000 miles; However we believe that if owners avail themselves of our very cost-effective intermediate oil and filter change (see below) at a cost of £35.00, then the service intervals of these models can also be 10,000 miles or 12 months whichever comes sooner.Where Smart-TECNIC can make a difference:Our main ‘C’ services differs in two ways from manufacturer`s specifications: Firstly, we change the engine’s ‘breather line’; this is a plastic pipe with a one-way valve, and in time this valve will fail and can affect the health and longevity of the engine. Having this pipe changed once or twice during the life of the car will greatly lengthen the lifespan of the engine. Secondly, we also change the main earth strap on the engine; the original earth strap is not protected from the elements and deteriorates over time. Our replacement earth strap is sheathed, and will outlast the original item. Having a good earth connection is vital to the sound and proper running of any motor car engine. These additions to standard servicing have been brought about by our experiences of working on these cars, and highlights our enhanced knowledge of these cars brought about by our specialist knowledge.Oil and Filter Change:Smart-TECNIC also highly recommends an intermediate oil change at 5,000 miles or six months and we can carry this out for just £35, which is possibly cheaper than the oil can be bought for at Halfords. We use fully synthetic Fuchs or Mobil 1 oils at exactly the right specification for your car. (ACEA A3, MB 229.3 or 229.5).If pre-booked we can carry out an oil and filter change while you wait, and we will give your car a look over at the same time and we are always happy to have a chat with the Smart owner about their car. We also carry out all other aspects of mechanical work and can supply and fit brakes, tyres, exhausts, springs, suspension, ABS rings etc. Just contact us for a quote, we believe we can do the best for the Smart owner. Please note that whilst some of our work is fixed price, our labour charge is currently £50 per hour, whereas the labour charge at main Smart dealerships are in the region of £120 per hour. | Diagnosis | Smart-TECNIC carries the MB STAR diagnosis equipment which is a near-dealership level system. For just £45 we can carry out a scan of your car, print a report and clear existing fault codes from your ECU. If your car has a mis-fire or you are worried about high oil consumption, we can also carry out a cylinder leakage test. The equipment we use for this pressurises each cylinder of your car`s engine, and determines whether the cylinder has compression, and if not it reveals why not. This test takes about an hour to complete and we charge £45. We can combine both checks for £80. | Air conditioning | Smart-TECNIC can carry out re-gassing and repairs to air-conditioning systems on all makes of Smart car at competitive prices. Most problems are caused by the fracturing of one particular pipe where it fits into the air-con compressor. Please contact us for costs of this repair. | Key-Coding | Smart-TECNIC can re-code keys as required, and can also supply new replacement keys, both of the single and three button type. We charge £55 for the coding of 1 - 3 keys. Please contact us for the cost of a new replacement key, and please note, we may be cheaper than eBay. | Timing Chains | Smart-TECNIC recommends that the timing chains on these cars are replaced at 75,000 miles. This is particularly important on the 700cc Smart cars. We can carry out this task for just £350. The timing chain kit is a genuine Mercedes-Benz supplied item and consists of new chain, camshaft and crankshaft sprockets, hydraulic tensioner and tensioner and guide rails. | Engine Work | Q: My engine feels poorly. Can you help? | Yes. Firstly, let’s explain: The Smart car has been around for a while now and indeed the earliest cars are now over ten years old. The Smart car only has a small engine and it’s fair to say that these are starting to wear out. However, they are almost always totally rebuild-able. You may have noticed that your Smart has gained an appetite for engine oil and maybe the exhaust is a little smoky too. It may have developed a misfire, or the engine is making sounds not heard before? Either way, this need not be all bad news, and we can help. It is important that you act sooner rather than later because if you continue to drive whilst the engine is using oil you can cause further damage: in the short term you may well damage your spark plugs, and then the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors, and longer term, because oil burns hotter than petrol, the increased combustion temperatures will eventually burn away the exhaust valves. | Q: What can you do and how much will it cost me? | For the `burnt valve` situation we can remove your engine and rebuild it as necessary - generally speaking the quicker you act the less your bill will be. We do a fixed price rebuild, which consists of: Removing the engine from car, Stripping down to component parts, Cleaning, checking and measuring of components, Cylinders honed (vital), New piston rings in all cases, Burnt valves replaced with new, New big-end shell bearings, New big-end bolts, New headgasket, New headbolts, and all that is required of a quality engine build.The engine is carefully reassembled using new fasteners, gaskets and seals as required, and new oil and filter and new air filter plus a new Breather Line. The engine is then refitted into the car. The car is given a road test and then thoroughly checked afterwards. | What is not included in the cost? | Unfortunately some engines we have worked on have been found to have suffered problems with camshafts, timing chains and valve-gear, almost always caused by wear or failure of the timing chain, and the engine will be sounding very unhealthy. It is for this reason that we highly recommend having a new timing chain kit fitted at approximately 75,000 miles, and this is particularly important on the 700cc models. Whilst the work to rectify this would naturally need to cost more, it is unlikely that there will be any extra cost in labour charges because the engine will have been stripped completely down anyway, and the new parts would be fitted during the normal rebuilding process. The cost of replacing the timing chain whilst the engine is being rebuilt would be £110.The `bottom end` of Smart engines are known to be strong and normally no work is required on the crankshaft and bearings. However if the timing chain has failed, or is in the process of wearing, then metal particles may have travelled around the engine and there might be a possibility that the crankshaft needs regrinding, with new bearings required to suit. This should not be necessary if the engine has only suffered from a burnt exhaust valve and is not included in the fixed price build. Turbos:The turbocharger unit, which includes the exhaust manifold and waste-gate actuator, is an ancillary part of the engine and is not covered by any engine work. If you`d like us to check your turbo unit out please let us know. Occasionally external cracks can be seen on the exhaust manifold and naturally we would inform the owner if this is the case. | It sounds like the cost of repair might be more than the car is worth? | This is sometimes a problem that an owner can face, so this is our advice: The Smart car is well made and is a particularly sturdy little machine. In our opinion both the bodywork and the interiors of these cars stand up to the test of time better than many other cars on the market, and in all other aspects Smart cars are very reliable.You may decide that the cost of having your engine rebuilt is not worth it and you may decide to replace your car; but this will mean that you will have to sell your car at a much-reduced value, and then you may be venturing into the unknown with a replacement used car. We say that if you like (or indeed love, as many owners do) your Smart car, and you have been very happy with it then we think `stick with the devil you know` and by having your engine rebuilt your car will have years of life ahead of it. The value of your car will be enhanced and it will return to giving the economical motoring that Smart car owners enjoy.We guarantee the work that we do for 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is sooner.
